The Assembly hall which served the clergy and the laity of the ancient Abhayagiriya monastery belongs to the late Anuradhapura period. The assembly Hall discovered beneath & this had been build by king Kanittatissa (164-192 A.D.) in the 2nd century A.D.according to his stone pavement inscription. The north-east of his stone compound is the remains of an image house for a deity.
