Introduction
This is most ancient Bodhi-tree shrine of the Abhayagiri monastery as reported by the Chineeās monk fa-hien who visited Sri Lanka in the 5th century A.D.
The Buddha images and vajirasanas (sacred seats) found around the Bodi-tree and the remains of four construction phases from the first centaury B.C. are visible here. The Bodhi-tree that was originally planted here was from a seedling of the Jajasrimaha Bodhi-tree of India.
