Introduction

Archeological excavations here have confirmed that this is an ancient hospital. One room has still a stone cut medicine though (behet oruwa) which has been used for treating patients by immersing in herbal oil. Several surgical and medical instruments used at the time have been discovered during excavation at the site. This 12th century hospital more or less follows the 8th century Mihinthale Protype in having two distinct units built together namely living and treatment sections. Both sections have open courts of the center.
