Introduction
This is the oblong precinct covering an extent at about 8.6 hectares is the city
center at Polonnaruwa and is fortified by wide and high brick ramparts on all four
sides. Ruins of royal place the council chamber and many other associated buildings
could be seen here the largest structure here is the seven storied palace named
Vaijayantha prasada built by the king parakramabahu the Great (1153-1186 A.D.) the
monument with stone pillars to east city palace is the council chamber named Raja
vaishyabhujanga mandapa of king Parakramabahu the Great. The foundations seen in
between the Royal palace and the council chamber may be the basement of the palace
built by king Vijayabahu the Great(1055-1110 A.D) Beyond the city wall on the south
east quarter is the Kumara Pokuna or the Royal Bath made of stone.
