Introduction
This is natural rocky outcrop making the southern boundary of the Alahana pirivena,
It has several caves, one of which is known as Madalayahalena (cave of Madalaya)
This had led to some legends about the human habitation of this region. The inscription
over the drip-ledge of this cave is attributed to the 2nd century BC on paleographical
evidence. At that time, members of the elite donated caves to the monks, and this
too is considered such a one. ’Madalaya’ was probably a chieftan who donated the
cave.
