Although popularly called Naipena Vihara. This is a Hindu devala complex. The ancient name of the complex or its builder is not known. The present name probably derives from the Vishnu Shrine located in the northern sector of the shrine complex. The shrine located in the southern sector is the largest Siva temple in Polonnaruwa and the well near it is also and early work. The largest hoard of Hindu bronzes was recovered from this site.
