The people of Sri Lanka are cricket enthusiasts. Cricket is a national craze in Sri Lanka. Cricket in Sri Lanka is driven by a single, all encompassing vision: to make Sri Lanka the best cricket playing nation in the world in both forms of the game. The team first played international cricket in 1975. It was later accorded Test status in 1981. Great progress has been made since Sri Lanka’s inaugural Test against England in 1982. Sri Lankan cricket's greatest moment undoubtedly came during the 1996 Cricket World Cup Win, when they defeated the top-ranked Australian team in the Final. It was a moment of triumph not only for the team but a moment of Jubilation and celebration in the entire country.

Sri Lankan Cricket team boasts of world class players like Sanath Jayasurya, Muralidharan, Attapattu, Jayawardene, who rank among the top players in the Cricket fraternity. These players has also taken Sri Lankan Cricket to greater heights. Sri Lanka Cricket has also taken steps to ensure that the players can benefit from world-class training facilities. Sri Lanka boasts of Five international stadiums – Premadasa, SSC, Galle, Pallakelle and Dambulla. A cricket academy and training facility has been developed at Premadasa International Stadium.

Major achievements of Sri Lankan Cricket Team: - They emerged as champions in Asia cup in the year 1986,1997, 2004.

- They also emerged as Joint winners along with India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2002.

- They were the winners of the Asian Test championship in 2001-2002.

- Sri Lanka is the only team to have participated in every edition of the Asia Cup.

- Sri Lanka are the only ICC Trophy winning team to have gone on to win the World Cup at a later date

- Sri Lanka secured 4rth place in the common wealth games.

- Sri Lankan cricket team once again overwhelmed their supporters with the team's tremendous performance at the Nat West Series, 2006.

However the Sri Lankan team has taken various steps to bridge the gap between domestic and international cricket, and to speed up the development of upcoming players. Sri Lankan team has given international exposure to the young players to upgrade its level in the world rankings. Craze for this popular sport of cricket is not going to die out and the hysteria surrounding cricket would remain for many more years to com
